Application Information for Confucius Institute Scholarship

In order to train and cultivate highly-qualified Chinese language teachers and facilitate the promotion of Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) has launched the “Confucius Institute Scholarship” (CIS). Its aim is to support outstanding students, scholars and Chinese language teachers recommended by Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms as well as some HSK test centers (hereinafter to be collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) to study in Chinese universities and colleges (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”).


l ELIGIBILITY

All applicants must be

a) Foreign nationals (Non-Chinese citizens)

b) In good physical and mental health and have a track record of both good academic performance and behaviour

c) Aspire to a career in teaching or the international promotion of the Chinese language.

d) Between the age of 16-35 (as of September 1st, 2019). Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers should not exceed the age limit of 45.


l SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS

A. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

Commences in September 2019 and provides a scholarship up to two academic years. Applicants must be Bachelor degree holders, and have a minimum score of 210 in HSK 5 as well as 60 in the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Applicants who are able to provide notarized copies of future employment offers (upon the completion of their studies) are preferred.

B. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

Commences in September 2019, and provides a scholarship for up to 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

i. TCSOL

Applicants must have achieved a minimum score of 270 in HSK 3. Must have taken the HSKK exam but no specific score in required.

ii. Chinese Language and Literature

Applicants must have achieved a minimum score of 180 in HSK 4 and 60 in the HSKK exam (intermediate level).

iii. Chinese Language Study

Applicants must have achieved a minimum score of 210 in HSK 3.

C. Scholarship for One-Semester Study

Commences either in September 2019 or March 2020, and provides a scholarship for up to 5 months. Applicants who have previously held X1 or X2 visas are not eligible.

i. Chinese Language and Literature

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 3). Applicants must have taken the HSSK exam but no specific score is required.

ii. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taiji Culture programme

Applicants must have taken an HSK exam but no specific score is required.

l APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Online registration will be available from March 1, 2019 on the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (cis.chinese.cn) and the Hubei University International Student Service System (hubu.17gz.org/member/login.do). Please log-in to search for ‘recommending institutions’ and ‘host institutions’ You can upload application materials online, track your a application progress, as well as view feedback and admission results. Scholarship holders need to confirm the relevant procedures with their host institutions, print out their CIS certificate online, and register with their host institutions within the designated deadline, as per the letter of admission.

The application deadlines are

a) May 20th (for those commencing in September 2019)

b) November 20th (for those commencing in March 2020)

Hanban will review scholarship applications and notify applicants of the results three months before each enrollment date.


l CHINESE BRIDGE AWARD RECIPIENT POLICIES

Chinese Bridge winners who have been awarded the 2019 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” need to log onto the scholarship website and submit the relevant documents to their host institution- including but not limited to their CIS certificate. l OTHERS

a) For information related to your major, please contact Hubei University

b) Applicants should familiarize themselves with specific criteria and be aware of the registration deadlines.  Specific procedures to submit the necessary documents must be followed.

c) Degree students will be subject to annual assessment under the Annual Appraisal Procedures of Confucius Institute Scholarship

d) Those who failed to register on time, fail to pass the health assessment, drop out midway and/or get suspended will be not be awarded their scholarship.

Appendix 1


Confucius Institute Scholarship Coverage and Criteria


The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, as well as a living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance.

a) Tuition fee is to be used to provide teaching, as well as provide scholarship students organizing cultural and social activities, as well as organizing Chinese language proficiency tests. Tuition fee does not cover the cost of textbooks or extra-curricular travel.

b) Accommodation fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide students with in-campus apartments. Students may also live off-campus upon application and getting permission from the host institutions. Students who live off-campus are entitled to accommodation allowance of 700 CNY per person/month paid on a monthly / quarterly basis from the host institutions.

c) Living allowance is granted by host institutions on a monthly basis. The monthly allowance for undergraduates, one-academic-year study students and one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL student, the monthly allowance is 3,000 CNY per person.

Students are required to complete the relevant enrollment procedures for each semester within the stipulated period; otherwise, their scholarship may be canceled. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (inclusive) of the month are entitled to the full allowance for that month while those enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the amount.

During the study period, any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), their allowance for this period will be suspended.

For students who suspend their studies or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by the host institutions, their allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension. Either, on the date they drop out or when the University reach a decision to punish them.

The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by host institutions.

Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institutions in accordance with relevant regulations related to international study in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. The insurance fee per person is 160 CNY for the four- week programme, 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students who will spend two- semesters at the University.












Appendix 2


Application Documents for Confucius Institute Scholarship


A. For all applicants

a) A Scanned copy of the passport photo page

b) A scanned copy of score reports from both the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).

c) A Recommendation letter- from the head of the recommending institutions

B. For degree scholarship program applicants

a) A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript.

b) Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL Students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Those who can provide a notarized employment agreement with teaching institutions are preferred.

C. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment as well as a reference letter issued by the employing institution

D. Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.

E. Others

a) Physical Examination Record (medical check)

b) Proof of financial well- being (such as a bank statement)

c) Criminal record check
